Subsoiling for planting trees in dehesa system: long-term effects on soil organic carbon

چکیده
Abstract Incorporating trees into agricultural systems, including grasslands, increases the soil organic carbon sequestration and contributes to climate change mitigation. Site preparation for tree establishment is a common practice that can involve variety of techniques implements such as subsoiling. This study aimed evaluate long-term effects subsoiling on (SOC) concentrations stocks in Mediterranean grassland afforested with holm oaks 22 years ago now converted Dehesa agroforestry system. The was conducted dehesa farm Southwest Spain. Soil samples were taken at six depths under 10 canopies within outside original line. Subsoiling significantly decreased SOC concentration. Mean concentration first 20 cm 30% lower 60 2660 g m −2 line 4320 There clear reduction stock increasing depth. Root abundance deeper rooting increased but did not translate sufficient accumulation soil, which moderate even after years. reveals that, long term, there trade-off CO 2 between planting subsoiling, highlighting need further research potential benefits detriments

Biochar can influence native soil organic carbon (SOC) mineralisation through "priming effects". However, the long-term direction, persistence and extent of SOC priming by biochar remain uncertain. Using natural (13)C abundance and under controlled laboratory conditions, we show that biochar-stimulated SOC mineralisation ("positive priming") caused a loss of 4 to 44 mg C g(-1) SOC over 2.3 year...
متن کاملUrban Tree Effects on Soil Organic Carbon
Urban trees sequester carbon into biomass and provide many ecosystem service benefits aboveground leading to worldwide tree planting schemes. Since soils hold ∼75% of ecosystem organic carbon, understanding the effect of urban trees on soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil properties that underpin belowground ecosystem services is vital. We use an observational study to investigate effects of thre...
متن کاملLong-term fertilization alters chemically-separated soil organic carbon pools: Based on stable C isotope analyses
Quantification of dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC) pools under the influence of long-term fertilization is essential for predicting carbon (C) sequestration. We combined soil chemical fractionation with stable C isotope analyses to investigate the C dynamics of the various SOC pools after 25 years of fertilization. Five types of soil samples (0-20, 20-40 cm) including the initial level (CK...
